One of the first spontaneous attack spells developed was the energy beam. Whereas the firewave delivers widespread damage over a rather short distance this spell concentrates the power into a sharply defined beam of energy, which reaches out farther and does more damage. But in these early times, sorcerers were not already that familiar with such a concentration of power and thus the spell's effect is somewhat unreliable.

Being a destructive spell, the early magicians kept their knowledge to themselves, and the magic conclave continues to do so.
